I would definitely NOT try running towards a barn... a lot of horses that have this issue don't care what they run into and I've seen a lot of horses and riders get hurt... including a rider dying... from such an attempt.

Interesting... must've been a header... when he takes off to run try turning him left, seriously, and see if he'll slow or stop... that's how headers are trained 'cause when you catch you turn left. Tom Thumbs are a pretty good bit so that shouldn't be an issue. The other thing I do when I'm training my young horses is try to teach them seat and voice commands entirely so I stay off their mouths - so starting at just a walk say whoa and sit back up to three times, and if he doesn't respond stop him immediatly after the third time. When he's perfect at a walk, start it at a jog, then evenutally a lope. Usually they get the point, and then you can be off their mouth,

2005-10-11 [Krackle]: he listens to everything when ur at a walk or trot but when we're at a run he just doesnt want to stop ive tried turning him to the left and the right b4 but he just turns real fast and keeps goin or runs sidways

If he turns real fast that's good, keep him turning... reach down real low on your rein and get a hold of his head and pull him in a circle and be ready for him to spin or whatever... do you have him like collected and all that, where he'll transition easily between the gaits up and down? If so, start in an arena, or even a roundpen, and go through the gaits, and make sure he stops at all of them, preferably just by leg and seat and voice cue without having to pull back on his mouth... then work your way up to a slow, controlled lope and so on... he needs to learn to run only when you TELL him to and to bring it back in nice and collected when you sit

2005-10-11 [01234]: up, it shouldn't even take pulling on the reins and stuff... really though circling, if there's room, is the best thing you can do if he bolts on you... and then go back to the foundation work and get the responsiveness down, get his attention focused back on YOU.

2005-10-13 [Krackle]: i would work him in an arena or round pen but i dont have any just open space...im ridin him home tomarrow 7 miles and he will stay for the weekend so i will work with him pretty much all weekend on his stoping...this one lady up here told me not to let him run at all for along time because he will want to run when ever i ride him and he will run untill he litteraly dies

2005-10-13 [01234]: LOL well I don't know about literally dying... most horses won't do that without a purpose in mind... but he could be dangerous to himself and to you. Just remember, too, that sometimes it has to come back to the ground work and basic pressure response and body language... without that foundation you shouldn't be ON a horse, 'cause they can be VERY dangerous. And for sure you gotta be patient and careful... running is fun but horses think it's fun too and some think it's freedom, and when the rider looses control, as has happened and you well know, it's just a wreck waiting to happen.

2005-10-15 [Krackle]: yea...i'm not gonna be riding him for awhile now. he got sick. he ate his oats way to fast and started chocking and so now we have to keep a close watch on him all night. i have to check on him every hour or two. he is getting better. hes still weezing every once in a while but he is moving around now. he still wont drink though. he was pukeing and coughing and everything he was rolling and laying down and it was scary cause i didnt know what was wrong with him i though he was colicing. but gladly he wasnt. hopefully he wont get a cold or anything like nemonia or something.

2005-10-19 [Krackle]: he is realy good! we kept him at my house in the backyard over night in a small pen to keep an eye on him and the next morning at 8 he kept hollerin for the others and they he could hear them across the street and so he got realy anxious and we were all outside talkin and my dad was over pettin him and then walked away and i was watchin him and he put his front feet under the fence (not electrified wire) then put his head under it pushed the wire up with his neck and shot off accross the yard up over the road and up the neighbors driveway and he wasnt trottin or walkin he was runnin lol it was so releiving to see him like that! i was so happy! lol

2005-12-12 [01234]: [Krackle] what is your reaction to his actions... are you nervous or distressed, because you seem to be, and even if you are not thinking you are your body may be communicating that you are. Focus on being stable and firm in the seat or in hand, but relaxing A LOT... he sounds like a very intelligent horse and it really is starting to sound like he is testing you to see how far he can push you and what he can and can't get away with. Let him know through minor punishment... be it backing up of a small tape or making him stop at whatever spooks him, let him know that you don't believe him and he's not gonna get away with it. If you react with concern or fear, he'll know he has you beat.

2005-12-12 [Krackle]: i dont get nervous when he does this cause im used to it from my pony. and when he spooks i make him stand still or i back him up or if he doesnt listen i turn him in circles till he stands. hes just nervous but i dont understand why. i try my best to get him calm but nothing works ive tried ridin at night in the morning and during the day and on sundays when there isnt many ppl but hes the same ive tried laying a tarp on him and he freaked out i dont know whats wrong

2005-12-14 [01234]: Have you tried having someone else with horse experience just handle him for a few minutes... someone who hasn't been so close to this behavior and will be EXPECTING good behavior instead of all the bad? I don't know what else to tell you, just keep pushing him and don't EVER stop until you get the reaction you desire, even if it means hours... you've gotta beat the idea that by behaving like this he can get away with it.

Every 10 minutes or so get up and sit somewhere else, so that she gets used to het humans being there and not doing her any harm.

2006-04-28 [Leaegd]: seems to me you've got a serious dominance problem there.. We had one like that once. With a lot of trouble we tacked her up, and one of the people here on the stable rode her. Of course she started bucking, everytime she bucked he reacted with his whip (just enough so she'd feel it, not really hit her), and she'd react with another buck, and that way he's been busy for 1.5 hrs (she bucked very strange sometimes, I dont know how he stayed in that saddle but he did it) And after that she behaved like a normal horse.

2006-04-29 [Krackle]: we had a guy coem out and ride her and she attacked him in the stall so he tied her to the horse trailer she attacked the side of the trailer and broke her halter he roped her in the yard and saddled her by tying her leg up so she couldnt put up a huge fight and kill him let her foot lose jumped on her and made her run out of the yard and down the road a lil ways he got off to tighten her tie down cause she kept rearing up and when he unhooked it she attacked him and he had to get 19 stitches in his arm

2006-05-08 [Leaegd]: Then you should start with learning her she can't attack you just like that. Put her with her halter to a wall or something so that she cant just run away, start brushing her or anything, and if she tries to bite, just give her a hit on the nose (it doesnt hurt very bad to her, we do that with any horse that bites, and it works) If she starts doing anything else (rearing or something, you can still get out of the way, she cant run..)

2006-06-05 [Krackle]: i keep her moving. if she moves away i work her. if she wants to move i make her move so then she can know that its better if she jsut stands there. she does tense up alot but i can usuallly get her losened up and calm again pretty quick so she isnt scared

2007-03-30 [Krackle]: Does anyone in here have any experience with horses that have gotten a fractured hock? My 18 year old gelding slipped on ice in the pasture and fractured his approx. 9-10 weeks ago and still favors it a lot. He walks on it with no problem, but once he stops he favors it. Right after he gets up from a roll or laying down he holds it in the air and if he tries to walk he will hop for a few feet before steping on it. He is so depressed and suffering so much i'm afraid i have to put him down. Please if you know any info on this that will help him get better let me know. Thank you so much!

2007-04-01 [Rydia]: what are you already doing to treat him for this injury? What did your vet have to say? Where is the fracture, exactly, and how severe is it? More info, please :-)

2007-04-02 [Krackle]: The vet wasn't able to come out and look at him so he told me over the phone to keep him away from ice or anywhere he could slip. So we had him in the stall for 8 weeks and i took him out everyday for a short walk. We gave him bute for 10 days in the beginning along with penicilin shots. Right now he is out in the pasture again, but i put him in the stall if it gets too cold out or it freezes. The fracture is somewhere in the hock we are not for sure. The only way to tell is to x-ray it, but the vet said the only thing the x-ray would do is tell us where it was at and if it was fractured or not and there wasn't anything different we could do about it.
